Jawi (Jawi: جاوي Jăwi; Yawi in Pattani) is an adapted Arabic alphabet for writing the Malay language.

Jawi is one of the two official scripts in Brunei and Malaysia as the script for the Malay language. Usage wise, it was the standard script for the Malay language but has since been replaced by the Roman script, and Jawi has since been relegated to a script used for religious and cultural purposes. Day-to-day usage of Jawi is maintained in more conservative Malay-populated areas such as Pattani in Thailand and Kelantan in Malaysia.

Jawi script has played an important role in the development of the literary tradition among the Malay-Indonesian peoples. It is often considered as a means of first access to their literary tradition for people in this region. Apart from this, a number of scholars – perhaps exaggeratingly – are of the opinion that the history of the Malay literary tradition started with the introduction of the Jawi script.

They are a friendly people and culturally well integrated as a group of close knitted community of relatives and members of the people of Singapore < see Singaporeans

Outsiders<non-Malays> describe them as Malay speaking people.

They are considered as the original People in the land of Malayan Penisula along with the Islands of Indonesia. Culturally they differ but there are many samliarities in <using Singlish> language and lifestyles along with the majority of Singaporeans as a multi-culturally society .

In Singapore the Malays are a distinctive race. Majority are followers of Islam (Muslim) and culturally stand out as part of the multi-cultural society here. Their language was adopted as the National language since 1963.
